    Local Community Policing in Aviemore

    Local Police - an Introduction

Badenoch, Strathspey and Nairn is just one of eight separate Command Areas within Northern Constabulary, the Police force responsible for Northern Scotland. With a total population in excess of 25,000, we have four main population centres, three of which are in Badenoch and Strathspey – Aviemore, Grantown on Spey and Kingussie, the other being Nairn.

Chief Inspector Andy Walker is in overall command of our area, and has the following establishment of officers:

    Inspectors – 2
    Sergeants – 9
    Constables – 54

There are also approximately 22 civilian support staff, without whom we could not function

This is an experienced and committed workforce, with strong, established links to the community and the local Authority.

This area is a major tourist destination with first class attractions such as the Cairngorms, championship golf courses, excellent game fishing and countless walking routes through breathtaking countryside. Much of Badenoch and Strathspey has now been declared a National Park, and this brings with it a significant increase in population due to visitors.

The main arterial road, the A9, runs through our area and acts as the gateway to Northern Scotland.

    AREA COMMANDERS REMARKS

Welcome to Badenoch and Strathspey, an area of exceptional beauty and one that is rich in cultural heritage, environmental splendour and community safety. In the Highlands, we enjoy the lowest crime rate in the UK, making it one of the safest places to live, work and visit.  This situation, however, can never be taken for granted and it is our primary aim to do all we can to protect and preserve this ‘quality of life’ we all value. Modern communications, along with modern transportation networks, makes the area far more accessible than ever before, thereby presenting tremendous opportunity to those who would attack these standards and denigrate the communities. It is crucial that people with such intentions are discouraged from such behaviour. Whether it is Road Safety, Criminal Conduct, Anti social behaviour, irresponsible actions on the hill, or whatever, we will do all we can to make people’s time in this area a safe and secure experience.

It is Northern Constabulary’s goal to make a positive contribution to the well-being of the Highlands and Islands through a problem solving approach to community policing. The strategic priorities to achieve this are:

SAFER ROADS WITH REDUCED DEATHS, INJURY AND CRIME

    SUSTAINABLE CRIME REDUCTION

EFFECTIVE ENGAGEMENT OF CRIMINALITY IN RESPECT OF SERIOUS AND ORGANISED CRIME

PUBLIC REASSURANCE IN THE SAFETY OF OUR COMMUNITIES

    This Area Command contributes to these priorities by consulting locally to ascertain the best way to address these issues within a local context. Following this local consultation these local priorities have been added to the Force strategic position;

    TO TARGET ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

TO ENSURE VISIBILITY OF, AND ACCESS TO, POLICING SERVICES ACROSS THE AREA COMMAND

    TO TARGET TRAVELLING CRIMINALS/BOGUS WORKMEN

TO ACTIVELY PROMOTE YOUTH INITIATIVES AND ENGAGE WITH YOUNG PERSONS

I hope you enjoy your time in Badenoch and Strathspey, whether living here or just visiting, and I assure you that my officers are enthusiastic in their approach to providing you with a courteous, professional service.

    Andy Walker
    Area Commander
