History of Aviemore

A Short History of Aviemore

In existence since the 1600s, the quiet growth of this historic village of Aviemore began in the 1800s with the advent of the railways, when it functioned as a small junction on the old Highland Railway.  Situated on the plain overlooked by the Monadhliath and Cairngorm Mountains, in virtually undiscovered, unspoiled and outstandingly beautiful country, the growth of Aviemore was a natural outcome. With the advent of the rail, travel inevitably became easier in this previously inaccessible area of Scotland. Aviemores’ popularity as a holiday destination grew, especially with Queen Victoria who visited regularly, enjoying the nearby spa village of Grantown-on-Spey - she also liked to ride out for a picnic. Walter Scott was also a dedicated visitor, inspired by his love of the Highlands, to write some wonderful stories and poetry.

The awesome Cairngorms beckoned to the intrepid explorers, climbers and geologists of the time, many of whom were already hardy visitors to Aviemore, seeking a challenge and the truth of existence. In the 1800s many of these geologists combed the Cairngorm Mountain range searching for the cairngorm semi-precious stone, a wonderful pale gold or amber in colour, which historically adorns a great part of the striking (and practical) Scottish jewellery and accoutrements, both past and present.  At one time it was said that these stones lay, in abundance, on the surface for anyone to pick up!

The consequent development of Aviemore was as a ski resort, in the 1960s, and this led to an increase in the demand for hotels thus creating more jobs and an increase in prosperity. Since this time Aviemore has progressed to become one of the most famous and important ski and winter sports centres in the world.  The wealth of activities, businesses and talent to be found within the village of Aviemore is enormous.  The village is now involved in an exciting programme of new buildings and improvements fast bringing this vibrant community into the 21stC.
