The village, with its unique surrounding villages, forms an excellent base for the country lover or sportsman alike, in all seasons. Cross-country routes are well marked for walkers, hikers, horse riders, mountain bikers, geologists and naturalists. The River Spey, which rises to the west of Laggan, in the Monadhliath Mountains, is the second longest river in Scotland providing wonderful fishing, walking and, some say “best of all” The Whisky Trail. This beautiful Highland countryside, with its wild, craggy uplands and breathtaking views, features in countless wonderful books by diverse authors. The main line Edinburgh to Inverness rail service passes through Aviemore. There are rail links from local shuttle bus services from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness airports, which does not entail extensive hours of travel.
